ECOLIFE’s Aquaponics Education and Community Outreach Coordinators, Connor and Chris, are leading a workshop at Deeper Learning 2019 titled, “Planting Seeds of Innovation: Swimming Deeper with Aquaponics.” In this workshop, attendees will learn simple and effective ways to integrate deeper learning competencies into curriculum using aquaponics as project-based STEM tool. The ECO-Cycle is a desktop ecosystem which demonstrates the symbiotic relationship between fish, plants, and bacteria. This turn-key system bridges the gap between STEM concepts and hands-on learning by engaging students in challenges surrounding our food system. Aquaponics is a closed-loop system which encourages creative problem solving through collaboration and sparks new interest in sustainable produce. Furthermore, aquaponics provides the framework for students to think critically about human impact on the environment as it relates to their classroom ecosystem.
DL2019 is the 7th annual gathering of powerful educators focused on creating more equitable outcomes by engaging students in deeper learning. DL2019 encourages and supports these educators to be leaders of change, disruptors of inequity and innovators of pedagogy. Funded by Hewlett Foundation, with the goal of promoting, developing and scaling the practices that result in deeper learning for all students, we focus on connecting the efforts of teachers, school leaders, districts, policymakers, researchers and the field. We seek to spread high leverage practices that support deeper learning outcomes, build the collective capacity of districts, schools, and organizations to spread deeper learning practices, and connect scholars, policymakers, and practitioners to each other.
